6 Week Moving Timeline

  • 6 Weeks Out
    • Choose which type of move you is best for you and your family
    • Create a moving budget and commit to stick to it
    • Look at storage units if you need one. Sparefoot is a great service to shop rates in one place
    • Create a moving folder to keep notes, receipts and bills for everything moving-related
    • Notify your kids schools of your move and transfer school records
  • 4 Weeks Out
    • Schedule your movers and get everything in writing
    • Start filling in your inventory sheet
    • Start collecting as many free moving supplies as possible
    • Order moving supplies you cannot find
    • Start your keep, throw away or sell/donate piles
    • Get quotes for auto and homeowners insurance
    • Service your car 
    • For a long distance move,  plan your driving route and schedule hotels
  • 3 Weeks Out
    • Start transferring your utilities and home services, forward mail, etc.
    • Complete your inventory sheet
    • Start packing and label each box 
    • Mark fragile boxes and put aside from other boxes
    • Take photos of your things as you pack
    • Get rid of hazardous materials and other items that moving companies won’t take
    • Gather all important and essential documents like birth certificates a
    • Start cancelling services that won’t be transferred to the nw home
  • 2 Weeks Out
    • Keep packing! Do a little bit every day
    • Start an overnight and essential bag for your first night at your new place
    • Schedule move out cleaners
    • Refill any medications 
    • Transfers medical information
    • Plan for your pets
    • Confirm everything! Anything you have schedule double check with those companies
    • Schedule a cleaning company to clean your new home before you go in 
  • 1 Week Out
    • Make sure your overnight bag is packed for the first night in the new place
    • Start taking picture frames down and filling in the holes
    • Get cash out for emergencies
    • Purge your pantry and fridge of old food
    • Pack some food for the trip
    • Defrost your fridge and freezer a couple days before the move
    • Drain water hoses from washing machine
    • If you have access clean your new place or schedule cleaners to come in 
  • Moving Day
    • Breathe! This is what you have been preparing for
    • Do a walkthrough after everything is packed and before your movers arrive
    • Protect your floors and door frames as furniture is getting shuffled around
    • Make sure you have extra drinking water
    • Tip your movers, these guys have been working hard
    • Do a final walkthrough of your home to make sure you did not forget anything!
